Many more men than women were sentenced to Stalin's camps. Not that women were spared, and the author took the opportunity to track down and interview nine of these women. Of course, most of them were quite elderly now, but their time in the Gulags were never forgotten, leaving an indelible shadow over their lives.

We hear, in their own words their experiences. The cold, the twelve to sixteen your work days, little food and wearing what we're basically rags. Many made friends, but since friendsh Many more men than women were sentenced to Stalin's camps.

Many made friends, but since friendships were frowned on, they were frequently sent to different camps. There were well known poets, actresses, anyone who came under suspicion for the flimsiest of reasons. The most well known person, who was exiled to Siberia with her mother was Olga Ivinskaya, a companion of Boris Pasternak, and was said to be the inspiration for the character of Lara in Dr.

Some of their letters are included. Just as their experiences differed, so too did their reactions. The author noted though a commanality in all their postures, an effect of their horrible times spent in Stalins Gulags. This is well done, with the author taking on a limited role.

She just listened and let the women tell their stories in their own way. The book also includes photos of then and now. ARC from Edelweiss. View all 10 comments.

Dec 07, Ana rated it it was amazing. Aug 31, Ronda rated it really liked it.

Dec 17, Javier C rated it liked it.

Nadie estaba a salvo.

Sep 15, Sekhmet rated it it was amazing. Recomendable leer. He tenido ganas de llorar en muchos pasajes contados.

Although I do think that the book suffers from a lack of structure and historical context, the value of these nine personal narratives is incontestible.

Thank you Edelweiss Plus for sharing this book. This is the story of nine women recounting their lives in a Russian gulag. Remaining human in such difficult conditions required adaptability, bravery and above all else attitude.

I found this book to be very informative. There are so many things that are not taught in our world history classes Or maybe I'm just old and can't remember.

The things that these young girls and women went through would've broken many of us. However, many of them credit their time in the gulags as being a positive experience. They learned what it is to have true friendship, they learned to be strong, brave, to have hope. Some found love. The women that were interviewed had a love of books, collections of them, and had memorized and recited their favorite verses while in the gulags. They learned to defend themselves from men who wanted to take advantage of them.

I can't imagine being forced to work in the cold of Siberia, especially without proper clothing, being malnourished. The damage done to their bodies, not being able to stand straight due to the conditions in which they were forced to work. Many had family members who were either killed immediately after arresrt or died in the work camps. These girls were not given representation, not given fair trials, and were arrested on the most trivial, and trumped up charges. It seems to me that it was a terrifying time to live, under Stalin's rule.

I loved reading the different experiences that each woman had endured. The lessons that they learned from those experiences. I felt that the interview subjects were excellent choices. Each one having a unique, yet similar, story to tell. Granted it seemed to have been written the way that it was spoken.

But to me, the flow was off. There should have been more structure. This is an amazing book.
