Like many other artists, H. Aside from Edgar Allan Poe — , the stories of Lord Dunsany — had the greatest influence on him. Lovecraft attempted to emulate the opulent and dreamlike fantasy style of the successful Irish author while simultaneously adapting it into a unique voice by using his dreams as the source of new plots and ideas. Lovecraft imitated Dunsany further by also creating continuing series of stories set in a parallel world with its own mythology and history — The Dreamlands.

Lovecraft's Dreamlands is a supplement published by Chaosium in for the horror role-playing game Call of Cthulhu that features six adventures set in the dream reality mentioned in H. Lovecraft stories. Lovecraft's Dreamlands is a page perfect-bound softcover book with three pages of color plates and a large two-color fold-out map. The book contains six adventures for Call of Cthulhu that are based on the early fantasies of H.
The book also contains two new skills that can only be used in the Dreamlands, as well as a compendium of creatures that inhabitant that reality. In the June edition of Dragon Issue , Jim Bambra was enthusiastic about this book, saying that it "greatly expands the options available to Keepers. Its resemblance to a fantasy world allows Keepers to let their Investigators enjoy a change of pace and emphasis.
H.P. Lovecrafts Dreamlands
For some, dreams can become reality. Lovecraft's Dreamlands provides everything needed for Call of Cthulhu or Cthulhu Dark Ages investigators to travel down the seven hundred steps, through the Gates of Deeper Slumber, and into the realm of dreams. The Dream Cycle
The Dream Cycle is a series of short stories and novellas by author H. Lovecraft  — Written between and , they are about the "Dreamlands", a vast, alternate dimension that can only be entered via dreams. Other locales include the Underworld, a subterranean region underneath the Dreamlands inhabited by various monsters; the Moon , accessible via a ship and inhabited by toad-like "moon-beasts" allied with Nyarlathotep ; and Kadath, a huge castle atop a mountain and the domain of the "Great Ones", the gods of Earth's Dreamland.
